InRhythm was asked by Mypaper a singapore based newspaper about InRhythms demand for group drumming for team building in Singapore. Here is the article.
How is team building achieved through drumming activities?
Team building is achieved through interactive drumming on many levels. The interactive drumming is used as an analogy as to what it takes to build and enjoy a great team. There is the common pulse that connects every team member together. The common pulse allows every team member to play their part within a structure that is respected by the entire team. When everyone respects the common pulse each team member can become very effective at playing their role.
Interactive drumming shows team members how crucial it is that the entire team listens and communicates with each other. If there is no listening or communication the team (the music) does not work in harmony. By listening to each team member each person can then relates to each other person and in that state of being can create effective communication that allows productivity, creativity, problem solving and logical and lateral thinking.
Group drumming also shows how each department of a company relies on each other in order for the whole company to work. By learning this through rhythm team members can find a new respect and appreciation for each other.
Group drumming is also powerful as a team building exercise because all team members create the music together and in that they feel a sense of achievement, co operation and accomplishment.
The most important reason why group drumming is a powerful team building exercise is that the experience for team members drumming together creates a very real sense of community. Community is at the core of a successful team . Strong communities are powerful.
What organisations in Singapore have signed up for these activities?
Companies and organizations from every sector sign up for group drumming after all they are communities and require that everyone feel connected and a sense of belonging and support.
How are these team-building activities different from usual team-building activities?
They are music based. The drumming has a kinesthetic charge of an outdoor activity but can be played in doors. It requires minimal setup and can be complete in as little as 15 minutes up to weekly 1.5 hour programs. Also you can have as little as 3 people to unlimited numbers taking part in drumming.
Is the drumming for these activities planned beforehand?
Yes and no. We can offer both pre planned music (where we show people what to play) and also improvised drumming ( where each person explores their own sense of rhythm). Both approaches are very effective and we commonly combine the two approaches.
